New Delhi: With the three demands of immediate implementation of 33 percent reservation for women, relief from backbreaking inflation and ensuring safety of women, the All-India Mahila Congress, under the leadership of National President Ms. Alka Lamba, organized a ‘Nari Nyay Andolan’ on July 29, 2024, at the Jantar Mantar, Delhi, in which thousands of women from across the country participated. The crowd at the Jantar Mantar was such that the Delhi Police put up barricades at various places and stopped the buses carrying women who were coming to join the movement. The police brutally arrested the protesting women, including AIMC President Ms. Alka Lamba and other leaders, by dragging them on the ground using force. Many women workers were injured in this.
When the protesting women Congress workers were going to submit a memorandum to the President of India regarding their three demands, the police stopped them there too and arrested them after a scuffle.
National President of Mahila Congress, Ms. Alka Lamba condemned the efforts of Modi Government to crush the movement of Mahila Congress and said that until women reservation is implemented with immediate effect and women do not get justice, Mahila Congress will keep on demanding from the government; be it on roads or in the parliament!
On ‘Nari Nyay Andolan’ Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha) Shri Rahul Gandhi gave a message supporting the movement:
“Women’s under representation in politics severely undermines democracy. When 50% of our population is denied a seat at the table, we risk building a vision that ignores their hopes and aspirations. The Congress Party is committed to implementing 33% reservation in Parliament and State Assemblies. The Mahila Congress has a historic opportunity to deepen our democracy, particularly through leading a nationwide campaign for adequate representation of Dalit, Adivasi and OBC women in our legislatures.
During the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress Party’s ‘Mahalaxmi Scheme’ captured the imagination of women across India. Women are among the worst affected by the BJP’s failures. From gas cylinders to prices rises, our sisters across India are burdened with running their households on a tighter budget each month. The Congress Party will continue to fight to ensure that Rs. 8500/month is transferred into your bank accounts.”
